Faith and Behavioral Health: Is There a Connection?

If so, how does Pine Rest integrate the two, especially in light of the time constraints placed on patient care? We posed these questions to a panel of Pine Rest’s board and staff.

Pine Rest Mission Statement
Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is called to express the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by providing behavioral health services with professional excellence, Christian integrity and compassion.

Is there a connection between someone’s faith and behavioral health?

I do believe there is a connection. When one aspect of life is out of balance, the other areas are affected. If we are not feeling good about ourselves, our bodies may not function properly. Then, our spirit can feel low and disheartened.

Monica Smith, RN, BSN
Pine Rest Adult Unit Lead Nurse

I believe there is a connection between a person’s faith and behavioral health. It is something in the human spirit that resonates with God’s presence. Each person is created in God’s image. Sometimes people lose sight of that image. Helping a person rediscover it is a healing ministry.

Rev. Carl Kammeraad
Pine Rest Board Member

How can integrating faith with behavioral health care help with patient care?

I think a person’s belief system or faith can be used as a strength, as a way of sustaining and supporting some of the biological, physical, and therapeutic modalities of treatment. It builds on the individual’s resources, helps patients cope more effectively with issues, and promotes wellness and better integration of the mind, body, and spirit.

Ruth Davis, RNC, BSN

Faith can definitely influence someone’s behavioral health. It can provide a sense of hope in the midst of chaos. Spirituality is at the core of what gives people life. When a patient is on the inpatient unit for only a few days, you have to look for a model of care that reaches the “soul.”

Daniel J. Kelly, MA, Chaplain
Pine Rest Mulder West Unit and
Psychiatric Medical Unit

What are some of the ways Pine Rest integrates faith into the delivery of behavioral health care?

When working with the residents of Pine Rest Christian Homes, the question becomes how do you minister to them spiritually? To ignore their spiritual needs would be contrary to Pine Rest’s mission. Each Sunday, we hold musical worship services for residents in the Chapel. In addition, the chaplain comes by the homes with her guitar to minister and build relationships through song. The residents really enjoy this spiritual music therapy. It helps them on a social, behavioral, and spiritual level.

Keith Van Zoeren, MA
