Inpatient Services for Developmental Disabilities

Having a developmental disability such as mental retardation or autism can make individuals more vulnerable to developing mental health problems. In fact, people with developmental disabilities experience mental health problems at a rate 2 to 3 times that of the general public. Accurately diagnosing and treating these mental health problems can be challenging due to difficulties with communication, coping skills, judgment, problem-solving skills, and having more limited resources. The limited availability of professionals who specialize in the mental health aspects of developmental disabilities also presents challenges to assessment and treatment.

When mental health or behavioral problems become severe, care in an inpatient setting is often required in order to ensure safety and provide immediate and intensive treatment. Pine Rest offers specialty inpatient services by a multidisciplinary team for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults with all types of developmental disabilities. Individuals with developmental disabilities are integrated into the services provided for the general population, but assessment and treatment are provided by professionals who specialize and are experienced in evaluating and treating mental health problems in persons with developmental disabilities.

As part of the assessment and treatment, our staff works with parents, families, and other professionals who may provide services for the individual. The purpose is not only to obtain accurate information and assist with family adjustment, but to help arrange aftercare that will promote long-term learning, adjustment, and optimal functioning.

The specialty services use approaches that place a person's value at the center of treatment, enhance quality of life for the individual, and promote self-determination.
