Organizational History

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is one of the Midwest's oldest and most prestigious behavioral health care facilities. It remains a nonprofit organization founded in 1910. Pine Rest occupies a 220 acre main campus in Cutlerville, just outside of metropolitan Grand Rapids. This comprehensive behavioral health center employs nearly 1,000 full-time and part-time staff. Pine Rest offers a full range of services in a variety of wooded settings at its main campus to meet the needs of children, adolescents, adults and older adults. This includes inpatient and partial hospitalization, a campus outpatient clinic, adolescent residential services, plus residential homes where persons with developmental disabilities live and work in the nearby community. In addition to its main campus, Pine Rest also provides residential addiction treatment services in the nearby community, plus has a large network of additional outpatient clinics in Michigan and Iowa, providing individualized and group therapy for people of all ages, races, religions, and all levels of need. Over 120 Pine Rest clinicians throughout the system offer professional therapeutic services for behavioral health problems across the continuum of care, and within a Christian framework. The organization also provides both Medicaid and Medicare services to all eligible patients.

The mission of the organization states that "Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is called to express the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, by providing behavioral health services with professional excellence, Christian integrity, and compassion." The organization underscores this Christian mission with a set of values, plus foundational affirmations and practical guidelines for staff. We pledge ourselves to the utmost care of patients, along with openness, hospitality, healing, relieving, teaching and coping as we restore lives and renew spirits among all individuals seeking care.

Hospital Based Services

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services has 36 licensed Child & Adolescent beds and 20 licensed beds for the Older Adult population. In 1997 we partnered with Saint Mary's Health Care, and now Pine Rest has 74 licensed Saint Mary's beds on the Pine Rest campus along with 20 licensed beds at Saint Mary's Health Care Psychiatric MedicalUnit. In addition to inpatient services, we provide a Partial Hospitalization Service for children, adolescents, and adults.

Philosophy of Care

Pine Rest & Saint Mary's make every effort to treat all individuals with dignity, respect, while providing the least restrictive environment possible. Our staff is trained on the principle of compassionate care. The goal of this approach is to enhance the quality of our treatment environment, making it both compassionate and therapeutic. We value positive relationships with our patients. The presence of valuing relationships makes patients' expectations regarding their care and treatment outcome more positive. Our environment is one that provides both physical and psychological safety. Patients are empowered to have control over their lives and actively participate in treatment planning. They are encouraged to actively participate in classes and programming offered by a variety of professional staff. The staff approach includes individual consideration and sensitivity to cultural, spiritual, developmental, physical, and psychological needs.

The units are locked; however patients are allowed to walk freely in designated areas. There may be time when a patient's movement may be restricted or limited in order to ensure their safety as well as the safety of others. Physical interventions are only used when there is an immediate risk of an individual harming himself/herself or others, and when other interventions have been unsuccessful. These interventions are carried out only by competent, trained staff that receive ongoing education in proper and safe techniques. The organization has clear expectations and guidelines regarding the use of physical interventions, and there is a monitoring program in place to ensure that quality patient care is provided at all times.

Your well being and safety are important to us. Your feedback will help us to improve our care and services. At the time of your discharge, you will be offered a satisfaction survey to complete. Please take a moment to complete this prior to discharge. If you are unable to complete the survey at discharge please request a self addressed stamped envelope for your convenience.

Advance Directives

At Saint Mary’s we want to be certain we are providing your care in a manner that is personalized and supports your wishes. Your patient rights booklet explains that you have the right to accept or refuse medical treatment. We include you in your treatment planning and need to know if you have any Behavioral Advance Directives, a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, a Durable Power of Attorney for Finance (DPOA), or a Living Will.

A Behavioral Advance Directive is written instructions for future me ntal health care in the event the patient is unable to make and participate in mental health care decisions. Patients requesting additional information about BHAD will be referred to their legal counsel.

A DPOA for Health Care is someone you have entrusted to make medical decisions if you are unable to communicate your wishes to your doctor or treatment team. This form is accepted as a legal document in the state of Michigan.

A Living Will is a document that directs, in writing, the kinds of medical treatment you would or would not want in the event you are permanently unconscious or terminally ill and can no longer speak for yourself. Living Wills are used to make medical decisions only. Usually if you have a Living Will, you will have appointed a DPOA for health care who is aware of your wishes and can speak on your behalf.

At the time of admission a nurse will ask if you have any Advance Directives already in place. If you do, we need to have a copy in your chart to incorporate in your treatment planning. If you do not have any Advance Directives and would like information on them, we will provide you with that information.
